Regenera and DP World sign circular waste management agreement in the Dominican Republic
MONTERREY, Mexico & SANTO DOMINO, Dominican Republic–(BUSINESS WIRE)–DP World, a leading provider of end-to-end supply chain solutions, and Cemex’s circular waste management business, Regenera, have signed an agreement to enhance sustainable waste management in the Dominican Republic. Per the agreement, Regenera will convert waste tires from DP World’s operations into an eco-friendly substitute for fossil fuels, effectively eliminating methane emissions from conventional waste landfilling practices.
Cemex’s waste-to-energy practices offer a solution to public and private entities looking to minimize their environmental footprint. Alternative fuels with biomass content are a key lever for Cemex’s ambitious decarbonization goals within its Future in Action program. With their high biomass content, waste tires are a valuable part of the alternative fuel mix; but when disposed of in landfills, they can emit harmful chemicals into the environment. In the case of Cemex, waste tires are used as part of their alternative fuel mix to fire their cement kilns.
The cement kiln has an operating temperature in the range of 1,450 Celsius degrees, which ensures that the emissions generated in the Co-processing comply with the environmental regulations on air quality and emission control at the atmosphere, in the Dominican Republic.
By partnering with Regenera, DP World is able to invest in more circular and sustainable waste management practices throughout all its operations, demonstrating its commitment to mitigating global climate change.
“This agreement aligns with our global sustainability strategy, ‘Our World, Our Future’ which focuses on climate change and decarbonization,” says Morten Johansen, CEO of DP World’s operations in the Dominican Republic. “DP World’s global decarbonization strategy aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 28% by 2030, carbon neutrality by 2040, and to become a net-zero emissions operation by 2050.”
Similarly, Cemex’s “Future in Action” program focuses on sustainable excellence through climate action, circularity, and natural resource management, working towards net-zero emissions by 2050. Regenera is part of Cemex’s Urbanization Solutions portfolio of integrated solutions for urban development.
“Regenera’s services are a key enabler for the circular economy,” says Juan Carlos Herrera, Cemex Global Head of Urbanization Solutions. “The global supply chain that the world’s economy relies on generates waste that is not always recyclable. Our solutions help ensure that this waste is managed in the most sustainable manner possible.”
As part of its commitment to sustainability, DP World is investing more than USD$500 million in cutting 700,000 tons of emissions from its operations by 2028 through electrification, efficiency, and innovation.
